• Description:
  The NIOSH Research Associateships program for 1987 was described. The program was part of a cooperative program sponsored by the National Research Council involving federal research institutions and organizations. Regular Research Associateships were awarded to applicants who had held the doctorate degree for less than 5 years. Senior Research Associateships were awarded to persons who had held doctorates for at least 5 years. The NIOSH Associateships were tenable at the NIOSH facilities in Cincinnati, Ohio and Morgantown, West Virginia. NIOSH provided the funds for the program and furnished the necessary support, services, facilities and equipment. The awards were generally made for 1 year initially, with the possibility of extension if necessary to allow the Associates to bring their research programs to a reasonable level of completion. Opportunities available for research in 1987 were described. These included projects in bioengineering, biological monitoring, cell physiology and biochemistry, epidemiology, immunology, microbiology and mutagenesis, noise, pathology, pharmacology, physiology and biophysics, radiofrequency radiation, stress and human factors, toxicology and vibration.
