Description:The NIOSH initiatives, Project Minerva (PM) and Project SHAPE (Safety and Health Awareness for Preventive Engineering), were reviewed. The goal of Project Minerva was to develop Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) materials and integrate them into engineering curricula; the long range objective was to institute bachelor degree programs in all business schools. The four phases of Project Minerva were creating awareness of the need for information on safety in business schools, encouraging the schools to include OSH materials in the curriculum, providing instructional materials, and developing a feedback system. By mid 1986 the NIOSH material was integrated into business courses at 25 universities. The focus of SHAPE has been to integrate safety and health into the curricula at approximately 300 engineering schools. A series of curriculum development projects have been initiated at four major universities. A cooperative effort with the engineering professional societies has been established. The authors of popular textbooks have been contacted to include in the texts the importance of OSH. NIOSH contracted the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology to develop a data base on safety and health in engineering programs. A Research Grant Program Supplement has been issued to stimulate the development of engineering research proposals on hazard control. The authors conclude that managers and engineers can and will have an important effect on improving the safety and health of workers. [Description provided by NIOSH]
