Description:The use of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Test for Resistance of Protective Clothing for Penetration by Liquids (F-903-94) in the evaluation of the resistance of the seams and closures of chemical protective clothing to liquid penetration, was evaluated in clothing specimens with and without seams or zippers. Tests were carried out with a variety of materials, stitch and seam designs, and two different zipper constructions, using water, trichloroethylene (79016), methylethylketone (78933), and isooctane (540841). The surface tension and viscosity of the chemicals tested proved to be poor predictors of penetrations. In general, the penetration test was compatible with the testing of bulky zippers and seams, and generated significant information for the purposes of industrial health programs. The results revealed that the very presence of seams and zippers, rather than the materials themselves, restricted the skin protective effectiveness of chemical protective clothing. Materials tested ranged from microporous polytetrafluoroethylene laminated to a fabric with double sewn seams, to disposable garments made of various plastics and provided with zippers, to butyl rubber garments with sewn and cemented seams.
