Description:Methods for the field evaluation of the chemical resistance of materials used in the manufacture of clothing intended to prevent the exposure of the skin to hazardous chemicals, were evaluated. Field tests for the determination of protective clothing were evaluated with emphasis on the chemical resistance of clothing to degradation, penetration and permeation by a given liquid chemical. The chemical degradation standard test method proposed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) was described. The field application of the ASTM Test for Resistance of Protective Clothing Materials to Penetration by Liquids (F-903-84) was contemplated. Available chemical permeation field methods were reviewed with emphasis on the whole glove chemical permeation test which was used by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to test latex neoprene gloves as the protective clothing against acetone (67641), in conjunction with a photoionization detector. The authors conclude that while chemical resistance field test methods are useful, their application to chemical permeation is restricted to chemicals with high vapor pressure, which are compatible with photoionization analysis and the use of a sensitive detector tube.
