Description:Portable infrared, multistation, multicomponent monitoring systems were described with reference to monitoring air quality and providing time weighted averages and exposures for individuals to various toxic materials in the workplace. Advantages of infrared systems were that they provided continuous measuring, gave immediate indication of concentration, and did not require service other than power. Disadvantages were sensitivity and positive interference. The author notes that the portable monitoring instruments have evolved into area monitoring systems which can look at one component at different locations. Microprocessing techniques allowed discrimination of overlapping data, enhancing computation of concentrations of each individual component. The Miran series of gas analyzers from Foxboro Analytical Division of the Wilks Scientific Corporation, South Norfolk, Connecticut, were described with emphasis on the Miran 801 multistation, multicomponent, stationary ambient air monitor. Schematics of instrument components, data, and spectra were provided. The system was designed to provide a variety of data handling capacities, including time weighted averages on a shift versus location versus component basis, alarms at set action levels, and essential items to meet government safety requirements and to provide safety backup.
