Description:The development of an analytical method for determining 4- vinylcyclohexene-dioxide (106876) (VCHD) was described. A known volume of air was drawn through a tube packed with XAD-2 sorbent. The XAD-2 was then transferred to a small, stoppered sample container, and the VCHD was desorbed with carbon-disulfide. An aliquot of the desorbed sample was injected into a gas chromatograph. The area of the resulting peak was measured and compared with the area obtained with a standard. The method was evaluated using 12 liter samples 10 to 1,500 milligrams per cubic meter (mg/m3) VCHD at 24 degrees-C and 766 torr. The probable useful range of the method was 10 to 1,500mg/m3; however, the upper limit of the usable range depended on the absorptive capacity of the XAD-2. Desorption efficiency must be determined over the range used. Confirming the concentration of generated samples was difficult due to the tendency of VCHD to adhere to or be absorbed by the surfaces in the generating system. The authors note that to eliminate this problem, generation surfaces must be inert. Even if this problem can be solved, further work is not justified considering the limited uses of and exposures to VCHD. [Description provided by NIOSH]
