Description:Criticisms of data analysis from the Hanford plutonium (7440075) production facility regarding delayed effects of small occupational exposures to radiation delivered at slow dose rates is reviewed. The previous work is reported to have demonstrated relatively high radiation doses for workers who subsequently died from cancer as well as a connection between this finding and tissues that are sensitive to cancer induction by radiation. Results are cited which showed that for cancers of these tissues the dose/response curve is non linear; the cancer risk increases progressively with adult age, doubling every 8 years; the average interval between induction and death is 25 years; and for a 40 year old male the doubling dose is 15 rads. The inclusion of all certified deaths in a comparative mean dose analysis is described. Two problems remaining after this analysis are examined: the mean cumulative dose was higher for live than dead workers, and also higher for non cancer deaths than for cancers of tissues not as sensitive to cancer induction by radiation. Facts supporting selective recruitment of workers with exceptional health, born less than 25 years before Hanford began to manufacture plutonium, are noted. A test of this hypothesis is described which demonstrates a positive correlation between the healthy worker effect and radiation dose. A follow up study of female radium (7440144) luminizing workers is reported which shows the derivation of cancer effective doses from actual doses and concomitant risk estimates. Tables are also provided which relate background radiation to cancer deaths in 329 Japanese cities and relate background radiation to cancers of sensitive tissues. [Description provided by NIOSH]
