Description:The limitations of a proposed method for the determination of benzoyl-peroxide (94360) on the basis of a catalyzed reaction are outlined. The proposed method involves the colorimetric determination of a blue complex resulting from the benzoyl-peroxide catalyzed reaction of N,N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine-sulfate with methanol (67561). Factors that influence the reaction rate are time, temperature and exposure to light. The reagent must be freshly prepared and held in the dark while the reaction may be carried out in subdued light. There is also the possibility that molecular oxygen could interfere with the reaction. No other suitable method was found in the literature. [Description provided by NIOSH]
