Description:The rationale for employing warning properties as a criterion in respirator selection is evaluated and guidelines are proposed for the evaluation of warning properties. Odor may be used when the minimum identifiable odor is above the threshold limit value, significantly below the toxic concentration, and the substance does not cause anosmia. Respiratory irritation is the only physiological effect that could safely be used as a warning property, but it must be manifested at levels which have no other harmful effects. Reliance on warning properties is considered to be an undesirable limitation of the use of air-purifying respirators; an effective end of sorbent life indicators should be developed.
