Description:This manual was part of a training program on safety in the school science laboratory. The manual was a working paper and contained administrative guidelines, lesson plans for lectures in the training course for teachers, workshop lesson plans for the course, and appendices which provide supplemental course material. Lecture lessons were aimed towards instructors and resource people. The conference of State Science Supervisors presented combination training and review sessions. Lecture topics included scope of the problem, needs assessment, legal aspects of classroom safety, student involvement, eye and face protection, chemical reagent handling procedures, chemical reagent storage and disposal, labeling, handling glassware, biological and animal hazards, ventilation, fire control, laboratory hardware, and recordkeeping. Workshop lessons included safety program planning, eye and face protection, labeling chemicals, and safety equipment. The core training course for teachers was designed to be presented in many ways depending on the conveniences of state and local supervisors. Each of the 14 lesson plans for lectures consisted of an overview, table of contents and text in a script format. Each lecture lesson plan was complete and independent of the others to facilitate change in the desired sequence. [Description provided by NIOSH]
