Vigilance performance in noise as related to personality and noise tolerance.

  The effects of noise on visual vigilance behavior are measured and related to selected personality measures, such as anxiety, neuroticism, and introversion obtained from a standardized personality test (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) and to noise tolerance scores for the subjects as acquired from objectionability ratings given to laboratory noise. Performance is found to be high, with no systematic changes for variation of noise background conditions, and, under intense noise conditions, with the more tolerant subjects performing better in noise. No significant relationships are found for noise tolerance and personality, although a trend is found for poorer performance by the more deviant subjects. [Description provided by NIOSH]
