Report on trichloroethylene vapor measurements at Bureau of Engraving and Printing Washington, D. C.

  Time weighted average measurements are made of trichloroethylene threshold limit value, 50 parts per million, in air vapor concentrations in printing operations involving three Koebau-Giori multicolor printing presses. Concentrations of 50 to 225 parts per million of trichloroethylene in air were detected, the highest being in solvent washing rooms. Recommendations made for reducing concentrations include enclosing the trichloroethylene tank drainage system and installing backflow control devices in drain lines; increasing exhaust ventilation capacity at tanks; reducing the percentage of recirculating contaminated air in air condition units; establish schedule for cleaning and calibrating equipment; and maintenance of close medical and supervisory surveillance.
