Description:Unsafe practices in handling solvents and highly toxic pesticides in various analysis operations are reported for a laboratory housed in an office building, which is also cited for inadequate ventilation and air conditioning for laboratory use, and for supplied air laboratory hoods not functioning properly. Recommendations include re-design and improvement of heating and air conditioning systems, and laboratory hoods to provide sufficient makeup air and dilution ventilation; performance of all operations involving pesticides or benzene, chloroform, acetonitrile, and carbon tetrachloride under hoods, substituting hexane, xylene, or other less toxic solvents for benzene when possible; discontinuance of oral pipetting of pesticides and solvents; tight sealing of containers; use of gloves; proper disposal of pesticides and solvents, without release of vapors to the room atmosphere; and briefing of new employees on hazards and safety precautions. With the named compounds, threshold limit values are given for petroleum ether (naptha), ethyl ether, methanol, dieldrin, and, with LD-50 values, toxaphene, lindane, parathion, chlordane, and DDT.
