  A survey was conducted of techniques to control occupational exposures to toluene (108883), benzene (71432), methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933), acetone (67641), ethyl-acetate (141786), xylene (1330207), hexane (110543), and heptane (142825) at the Johnston and Murphy Shoe Company (SIC-3140), Geneso Park, Nashville, Tennessee, on November 28 to 30, 1979. The facility primarily used local exhaust ventilation to minimize employee exposure. Protective clothing, shoes, and respirators were not required, but were provided. Analysis of area and breathing zone samples showed that the concentrations of all solvents were below the OSHA standard. It was noted, however, the benzene concentrations found in some operations were 1.05 to 3.22 parts per million (ppm). While these were less than the OSHA standard of 10ppm, they were above the NIOSH standard of 1.0ppm. The company management was very concerned about the benzene concentrations being above 1ppm. It is concluded that exposure to benzene at these concentrations is not hazardous. It is recommended, however, that the management make every effort to maintain the benzene concentrations below 1ppm.
