Description:A training course for occupational safety and industrial hygiene developed for NIOSH by the University of Oklahoma is reviewed. The course is described as a 12 week study program, followed by 8 weeks of training. Nine of the study weeks concentrate on industrial hygiene, and three are devoted to safety. The progress of the courses is discussed. The reluctance of the participants to remain for the training portion of the program is noted; the course and its objectives have been revised to meet the changing needs of the participants. The majority of the participants are state and local government employees. Subsequent changes from a 12 week to 8 week format are described. Contract modifications are cited that enable extension of the training service for additional periods of time and open participation to private industry on a tuition basis. The achievement of objectives is assessed and includes acquisition or development of appropriate training materials in occupational safety and health, assimilation of the materials into a coherent course format, and the presentation of training in a competent manner and effective mode so participants can acquire knowledge and skills requisite to occupational safety and health specialists. The authors recommend that private training organizations operate independently of NIOSH or OSHA. The support of existing and experienced training staffs is essential. [Description provided by NIOSH]
