  A NIOSH report on occupational skin disease is reviewed. The report summarizes: the extent and nature of occupational skin disease; a proposed program to reduce occupational skin disease, (emphasizing research into prevention and treatment); and the use of NIOSH regional resources centers to accomplish the effort. The establishment of an ad hoc committee of the Senate Appropriations Committee is cited, with findings that emphasize: lack of knowledge of incidence and prevalence of occupational skin disease; the need for better utilization of regional educational resource centers for training and research in occupational skin disease; and the need for a higher priority program with new staff, and redistribution of existing NIOSH funds and manpower. The recommendations of the ad hoc committee are discussed and are intended to improve data systems to identify extent and impact of occupational skin disease on society; develop a better understanding of the nature of these diseases; develop improved test methodologies to identify cutaneous hazards; increase the training and awareness of health professional regarding the problem; and improve control technology to apply to occupational skin disease.
