Description:A research analysis of information available on 1,1,2- trichloroethane (79005) (TCE) is reviewed. The toxicity of TCE is reported with the effects being depression of the central nervous system, and injury to lungs, liver, and kidney. Its toxicity is greater than that of chloroform (67663) and less than 1,1,1- trichloroethane (71556). It is an irritant to eyes, nose, and lungs, and may be absorbed through the skin in toxic amounts. The threshold limit value (TLV) set by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists is cited at 10 parts per million or 45 milligrams per cubic meter. The physical and chemical properties of TCE are compared with those of solvents in general and their common engineering controls are considered. The author concludes that there are no correlations available for the effects of TCE on humans and animals. No occupational exposure data or information on the effects of TCE at the TLV is available. Epidemiological and physiological studies are needed to determine chronic and acute effects in humans. Additional information is necessary for development of a criteria document and to set standards for exposure. [Description provided by NIOSH]
