Industrial Hygiene Survey of Selected Process Operations, Pittsburgh- Corning Corporation, Port Allegany, Pennsylvania.

  The results of an industrial hygiene survey of selected process operations at Pittsburgh-Corning Corporation, Port Allegany, Pennsylvania were presented. Environmental and breathing zone samples collected in glass block production, decorative paint spraying, mould stripping and filling, grinding, foamthane, and unibestos operations were analyzed for toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (584849) (TDI), lead (7439921), and asbestos (1332214). Noise exposures were measured, hood air velocities were determined, and work practices were observed. Noise levels of 92 to 106 decibels (dB) were measured in the glass block and mould filling operations. These were well above the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (AGIH) standard of 85dB. TDI concentrations in the foamthane operation did not exceed the ACGIH threshold limit value (TLV) of 0.02 parts per million. Asbestos exposures in the unibestos operation ranged from 1.4 to 11.5 million particles per cubic foot (mmpcf). The highest concentrations occurred in the breathing zone of the feeder operator and exceeded the ACGIH TLV of 5mppcf. Lead concentrations in the decorative paint spraying operation were less than the ACGIH TLV of 0.02mg/m3. Hood velocities were satisfactory except in the mould stripping operation. The hands and clothing of painters in the decorative paint spraying operations were excessively contaminated as a result of cleaning the spray guns. Recommendations included fitting workers in the glass block production and mould filling operations with hearing protectors, implementing a strict personal hygiene program to ensure that spray painters do not ingest paint on their hands and fingers, requiring feeder operators in the unibestos operation to wear respiratory protective equipment at all times, and improving housekeeping practices in the unibestos operation to reduce airborne dust.
