Description:Material intended for use as an adjunct or supplement to a course or workshop on spirometry is presented in workbook form. Basic information concerning gathering, calculating, and recording spirometric data is provided. Explanations of specific topics are given using overviews, guidelines, checklists, and other instructional aids. These explanations are accompanied by problem oriented examples. Exercises to test understanding and skills are provided. Answers and feedback related to the exercises provide an opportunity for immediate evaluation. Sections on spirometric techniques describe preparation of the subject for testing, an explanation of the forced expiratory maneuver, and means of determining if the test is valid. Calculations for specific tests including forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), and FEV1 as a percent of FVC are given. Means of calculating the percent of predicted normal values for results are outlined and procedures for comparing changes in followup spirograms are presented. Guidelines for record keeping and American Thoracic Society/OSHA instrument standards are also included. The authors suggest that the workbook is an effective aid for learning basic spirometry if students read the explanatory material, study the examples, do the exercises, and check calculations and reasoning. Health professionals may also find the material to be a helpful review and a handy reference aid. [Description provided by NIOSH]
