Description:A high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method was developed for analysing polycyclic-aromatic-hydrocarbons. Fluoranthene (206440), pyrene (129000), benz(a)anthracene (56553), chrysene (218019), benzo(k)fluoranthene (207089), and benzo(a)pyrene (50328) were obtained from air on a glass fiber filter. They were extracted with acetonitrile and analysed by reverse phase HPLC with fluorescence detection. Six analyses were performed in an 8 hour day. Recoveries were 51 to over 90 percent. The authors conclude the method is promising, but improvements are needed. [Description provided by NIOSH]
