Description:The development of the Racal's Airstream Helmet, which consists of a powered air purifying system incorporated into a wearable product, is discussed. Factors affecting the wearability of protective equipment by workers are identified. The need to design protective respirators which provide acceptable levels of protection and which meet wearability requirements is emphasized. User advantages of the Airstream Helmet are described. The need for regulations to reflect state of the art technology is discussed. The author concludes that the purpose of technological advances in the development of powered air purifying respirators is to improve human comfort. [Description provided by NIOSH]
