  The inadequacies of respirators, and particularly self contained breathing apparatus are discussed. Research on work impairment during the wearing of a respirator is reviewed. The physiological responses and limitations on respirator use are reviewed. Research examining the physiological responses of normal workers and of workers with mild pulmonary function impairments is discussed. Research priorities are identified. The author concludes that the greatest research need is the production of a regulator valve capable of following the true respiratory demands of the user. The development of a dynamic flow-resistance calibrating pump is identified as the second most pressing research need, followed by research investigating the psychophysiological responses of impaired users to respirator wear during rest and work.
