Description:A theoretical framework for the description and evaluation of paced work presented at the 1981 International Conference on Machine Pacing and Occupational Stress is discussed. Basic terminology and varieties of pacing are reviewed emphasizing how different paced systems may require vastly different amounts of cognitive and motor activity from the worker. A taxonomic system is proposed based on a description of tasks with respect to operator control of work initiation and duration. [Description provided by NIOSH]
