  A series of medical research articles on the occupational hazards of firefighting were presented. Case histories of pulmonary dysfunction and coronary diseases were included. Pneumonia was reported to be among the leading, disabling occupationally related disease among firefighters. Heart disease and tuberculosis were reported as the two most commonly occurring chronic diseases among firefighters. Etiologic factors, such as temperature extremes, trauma, stress, and exposure to smokes and gases, were presented. The authors suggest a stringent program for the prevention of occupationally related disease among firefighters. [Description provided by NIOSH]
