Description:The permeation of protective garment material by liquid benzene (71432) was investigated. Samples of various protective garment materials were examined to correlate weight and volume changes and dimensional measurements, following immersion in benzene, with the rate at which benzene permeated the materials. Weight gain or loss on immersion of the protective material in benzene, through useful for predicting permeation rates, did not show an absolute correlation with permeation. Total volume change was not very useful as a screening test, except for vinyl. All other materials showed reasonable correlations between swelling rates and breakthrough time (break through of benzene was determined spectrophotometrically). Tyvek, polyethylene coated Tyvek, surgical rubber latex, natural rubber latex, and Pylos showed breakthrough in 2 minutes or less. No material tested was impervious to benzene. The authors conclude that because of the limited effective of protective materials, much care must be given to personal hygiene during benzene exposure so that benzene does not contact the skin.
