Description:Factors affecting polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions from coke ovens were studied. A pilot scale experiment with 18 coke oven runs was performed. Coking rate, oil addition, blend ratio or composition, and coal source were evaluated. Samples of volatiles from coal tar pitch were collected during the coking cycle. Physical properties of the cokes produced from the different coal blends were determined. All blends of high and low volatile coals, whether coked at fast or slow rates, could be used to produce acceptable high strength blast furnace coke, although coke produced using the fast coking rate were preferred. Equations were developed to estimate the flow rate of raw coke over gas based on coking time. The authors note that the effects of the test factors on PAH emissions require further study.
