Description:An industrial hygiene survey of the Solvent Refined Coal process at the Fort Lewis, Washington pilot facility was carried out from February 5 to 8, 1979. In addition to 27 Draeger detector tube readings and carbon-dioxide (124389) (CO2) monitoring, 123 area and personal samples were collected throughout the facility. Hydrogen- sulfide (7783064), hydrogen-cyanide (74908), ammonia (7664417), arsine (7784421), sulfur-dioxide (7446095), and nitrous fumes were present at concentrations below the sensitivity of the detector tubes. CO2 concentrations ranged from 0 to 14 parts per million (ppm) throughout the process area except for the coal preparation building where concentrations between 20 and 26ppm were detected. The polynuclear-aromatics (PNA's) naphthalene (91203), 2- methylnapththalene (91576), 1-methylnaphthalene (90120), acenaphthalene, fluorene (86737), phenanthrene (85018), anthracene (120127), and pyrene (129000) were found in 75 percent of the sampling areas at concentrations that ranged from 9 to 127 micrograms per cubic meter. Benzene (71432), toluene (108883), and xylene (1330207) were detected at concentrations below the federal standards. The authors recommend that more research on the toxic and carcinogenic effects of PNAs be undertaken. [Description provided by NIOSH]
