A study of coal liquefaction processes: industrial processes: industrial hygiene comprehensive survey.

  An industrial hygiene survey of the Consol Synthetic Fuel process at the Cresap, West Virginia, coal liquefaction pilot facility was undertaken during April and May 1979. A total of 133 personal and area atmospheric samples were analyzed. Nineteen polynuclear- aromatics (PNAs), the most prevalent being naphthalene (91203), quinoline (91225), 2-methylnaphthalene (91576), 1-methylnaphthalene (90120), acenaphthalene, fluorene (86737), phenanthrene (85018), and anthracene (120127), were identified at concentrations between 0.1 and 0.2 micrograms per cubic meter. Other organic contaminants found at concentrations below the federal standards included toluene (108883), benzene (71432), and xylene (1330207). Particulates in the coal preparation area were also below the federal standards. The authors recommend that a statistical base be created for future epidemiological studies of workers exposed to PNAs and that more animal PNA toxicology studies be performed.
