  The development of standards for head protective devices are reviewed. Existing standards and testing methods for industrial protective helmets are described. Statistics on the frequency and type of industrial head injuries are presented. Research conducted on helmets to arrive at recommended performance standards suggested by the Wayne State Cerebral Concussion Tolerance Curve are summarized. The authors suggest further research on human tolerance to head impact, development of improved headforms, and collection of data on the frequency, magnitude, and location of industrial head impacts.
