Description:Several field test methods were outlined for the analysis of chemical protective clothing (CPC). Degradation tests checked the resistance of CPC to chemical degradation by exposing one side of the CPC to a challenge liquid for a known amount of time. After this time, any significant changes in the appearance and weight of the CPC were determined. Penetration tests analyzed the CPC for resistance to chemical penetration by exposing the CPC to a challenge liquid and then visually determining whether droplets appeared on the other side under various pressure conditions. Permeation tests consisted of a CPC sample in contact with a challenge chemical on one side and a collection medium on the other. Any permeant that seeped through the CPC was caught and then analyzed in the collection chamber. Breakthrough time was defined as the amount of time it took the chemical to permeate the CPC and was considered the length of time for which the CPC capably protected. Permeation test methods, as well as chemical detection techniques, were selected based on the chemical state of the challenger. Not only were methods of testing CPC specimens reported, but ways of analyzing whole garments, such as gloves and totally encapsulating chemical protective suits, were also detailed. The author recommends that CPC be tested under work conditions. Also, before the reuse of decontaminated CPC, the material should be tested again for chemical degradation, penetration, and permeation. [Description provided by NIOSH]
