Polar region worker protection requirements.

  Safety and health problems common to industrial operations in the polar region are reviewed. Hazardous conditions caused by climatic factors such as cold, ice, snow blindness, and poor visibility are summarized. Inadequacies in or safety problems caused by protective equipment are discussed. Safety problems caused by wear on rubber goods and other construction materials are also considered. Physiologic changes caused by cold environments and individual differences in cold susceptibility are discussed. The author suggests that observations made in the polar region will be useful in solving industrial and human factor problems associated with cold. [Description provided by NIOSH]
