Description:Studies of toxic neuropathy are reviewed. The grouping of the heterogeneous collection of neuropathies into neuronopathy, axonopathy, and myelinopathy is discussed. Techniques are outlined for the preparation and examination of peripheral nervous tissue in animals. The use of organotypic tissue cultures is discussed. The differences between pathological and spontaneous changes, preparative artifacts, or age related changes are described along with types of cellular responses to neurotoxic compounds. Toxic neuropathies are defined together with symptoms and chemicals that affect each. The different cellular targets of various neurotoxic chemicals are discussed. The authors conclude that nosology of toxic neuropathies is useful in predicting patterns of dysfunction and in designing appropriate tests to detect subclinical deficits. It also facilitates identification of a particular organelle or system that may be affected by the toxin. [Description provided by NIOSH]
