Waste anesthetic gases and reproductive health in operating room personnel.

  Reproductive problems in operating room personnel exposed to waste anesthetic gases are discussed. Research studies on laboratory animals and human subjects exposed to halothane (151677) and nitrous- oxide (10024972) are reviewed. Relationships between exposure and incidences of cancer, infertility, abortion, and offspring malformation are discussed together with the influence of trimester and duration of exposure on pregnancy outcome. The author concludes that waste anesthetic gas exposure is associated with adverse health effects in workers and their offspring. He recommends minimizing exposure to these gases.
