Description:An information profile on the potential occupational hazards in the petrochemical industry (SIC-286, SIC-2911) is presented. Process descriptions, relevant chemical and physical agents, the number of workers exposed or employed, biologic effects of agents encountered, and existing exposure standards are included. Incidence of mortality, injury, and morbidity is given. No pertinent NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluations were available. The authors conclude that because the industry is relatively young, it is too soon to evaluate the full carcinogenic potential of petrochemical facility exposures. [Description provided by NIOSH]
