Description:Etiologies and pathologies of several types of occupational lung diseases are discussed. Inhaled vapors are related to upper respiratory and peripheral airway disorders. Inhalation of organic and inorganic mineral dusts, the most common cause of occupational lung disease, is associated with four kinds of immune responses. Fibrogenic diseases are related to mineral dust deposits in lung parenchyma. Three examples of occupational lung disease (occupational asthma, extrinsic allergic alveolitis, and chronic beryllium disease) are described. The authors conclude that lung responses to environmental exposures are varied, recognition of disease depends on hazard awareness and complete occupational histories, and control requires early recognition and prevention before permanent damage occurs.
