Fluorocarbons: industrial hygiene survey.

  Two major fluorocarbon manufacturing facilities and two which use fluorocarbons in their products were surveyed to determine worker exposure to the fluorocarbons, and to document existing engineering controls, work practices, administrative controls, and biological and environmental sampling requirements and control procedures being used by the companies. Following the accumulation of preliminary data from a walk through study, detailed industrial surveys were made to conduct personal and area sampling in each factory over periods of three work shifts. Results indicate that worker exposure levels to the various fluorocarbons during normal work operations were lower than the current permissible level (1,000ppm) in each of the four facilities. The processes and operations surveyed, employment and job descriptions, medical and industrial hygiene programs, past exposures, current worker exposures and exposure control efforts at each of the four factories are described. Recommendations for further control of fluorocarbon exposure in the workplace are outlined. [Description provided by NIOSH]
