Description:This paper examines the growth in the use of rare-earth permanent magnets and its dependence on the availability of many of the lanthanide elements and yttrium (rare earths). Reserves and resources of rare earths, located throughout the world, are large relative to demand. Theoretical rare-earth supplies, based on the average rare-earth contents of producing reserves and theoretical processing and separation capabilities, are calculated to assess future rare-earth availability.
