Description:The role of roasting is discussed as it pertains to the minerals journey from raw materials in ores to metals as finished products. The different types of metallurgical roastings, operations, and furnaces in which they are conducted are reviewed. The thermodynamics and kinetics of some major roasting reactions are developed together with the different types of rate expressions that are commonly used and their ramifications to the overall roasting medium. Finally, some selected cases in metallurgical roasting are reviewed with special emphasis on the oxidative roasting of copper sulfides, and the magnetic roasting of iron oxides.
