Description:A pilot plant for production of metal powders was modified for use with aluminum and magnesium based powders. Such alloys included WE 43 and WZ 68. The production capabilities, limitations, and special features of the plant are discussed. Both the modifications in use and those that proved unsatisfactory are described. The effect of varying operating parameters is presented. These included oxygen levels in the plant atmosphere and gas-metal flow ratios. In certain cases the resulting powders were characterized by one or more of the following: shape, particle size distribution, oxide layer thickness, alloy addition losses, and evidence of rapid solidification effects. Operating parameters were varied to achieve satisfactory operation of the plant, but no systematic studies of the effect of variables such as superheat and nozzle alignment were made because (1) some of the variables were difficult to measure and (2) the plant only operated satisfactorily within a narrow range of values.
