Description:Several serious and persistent health issues are common to all mining operations. Data on many of the health issues in the mining industry are scarce. Illness rates and the cost of health-related illness and disease in the mining industry are not well known or readily available. Substantial research is progressing to address the issues, including at NIOSH SRL and PRL. This paper will briefly examine the current status of health-related issues regarding coal dust, silica dust, diesel particulate, asbestos, noise, lead, arsenic, silver, cadmium, and beryllium exposures to miners as well as research and other activities aimed at protecting miners.
