  The role that occupational safety and health professionals play in disease prevention is briefly outlined. Emphasis is given to the importance of prevention in reducing occupational illnesses and to the orientation of most medical practitioners toward health care delivery. Present knowledge of prepathological changes and of indicators of disorders from industrial chemicals and interactions with other environmental contaminants focuses on the desirability of training the occupational health consultant to keep the physicians aware of any information relating to health hazards and detection procedures, to strengthen nurses' support to the physician in this area, and to educate and inform workers. The occupational health consultant should have a background in chemistry and biology with master's level courses in physiology, communications, public relations, epidemiology, biostatistics, and a concentration in industrial toxicology and clinical chemistry. Discussion topics cover denial of employment to job applicants showing susceptibility to organic chemicals encountered on the job and possible unfair or antiunion discrimination using such preemployment examinations, employment of pregnant women, and consultation to small businesses to get them to recognize their responsibilities under the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
