Description:The current status of the effect of exposure to lead emissions from motor vehicles upon absorption of lead into the body of children and adults is reviewed. The main topics covered are: epidemiologic studies of air lead and blood lead relationships; studies of occupational groups exposed to motor vehicle emissions; studies of populations residing near roadways; clinical studies; exposure to lead in dirt and dust; sources of lead in dirt and dust; and health benefits of reducing emissions of lead from motor vehicles. The primary conclusion is that lead emissions from motor vehicles make an important contribution to the lead absorbed into the body of both children and adults. This contribution may at times be responsible for elevations in blood lead levels which are considered to be of health significance. [Description provided by NIOSH]
