A note on the application of stress research findings to problems of police job stress.

  The value of using organizational survey data as a basis for identification, solution and prevention of problems within the organization is being recognized. Individuals and the entire organization can benefit. Some more general considerations of stress are applied to the occupational world of policemen. These considerations include social incongruity, an "instrumental" attitude toward work, the inadequacy of the personnel selection model, and the lack of feedback. Studies which show that hypertension is 80 percent attributable to psychoemotional environmental stress may have relevance to policemen. Many physiological disorders are traceable to psychosocial factors, so alleviating stress should improve physical health. [Description provided by NIOSH]
