Description:The objective of this research was to design, build, and test a self-contained cryogenic breathing apparatus weighing 20 pounds or less that would be suitable for a 4-hour period of mine rescue work. The program led to the development of a 28-pound breathing apparatus that was unique in the inclusion of an oxygen liquefier and storage dewar as an integral part of the apparatus. The breathing apparatus failed to receive prototype approval from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration.
