Description:This report describes a field evaluation of the Bureau of Mines zinc- based soldering system for copper and copper alloys. The soldering system utilizes a sacrificial nickel plating to promote spontaneous wetting of copper and copper alloys. Radiator capsules soldered with zinc-based solder and exposed to a simulated radiator life cycle functioned to 1,000 hours without failure while those employing the 70pb-30sn solder alloy normally used by radiator manufacturers failed after 250 hours.
