  This investigation of the interactions between rock bolts and the surrounding rock was directed toward understanding the support mechanisms and characteristics of expansion-anchor and resin-grouted roof bolts as used in coal mines. Work on this investigation consisted of laboratory shear tests on various types of rock bolts; creep tests on resin-grouted steel bars; finite element analyses of single bolts, bolted roof structures, and friction rock stabilizers; and a field program where strain measurements were made at various points along resin-grouted bolts for a period of several months. The various design criteria are presented in a step-by-step manner as used by a design engineer. [Description provided by NIOSH]
