Description:Occupational health hazards in the shakeout, cleaning, grinding, and inspection departments of foundries are reviewed. Specific health hazards are described along with methods of hazard identification and control. Problems caused by silica dust, metallic dusts and fumes, gases, noise, and heat in shakeout departments, by dusts, fumes, noise, and gases in cleaning and grinding departments, and ionizing radiation, solvents, and ultraviolet light in inspection department are discussed. Remedial actions also are reviewed, including reporting of the problem, use of protective equipment, good workplace and personal hygiene, regular medical examinations, and engineering controls.
