  The development of standards for eye and face protective devices is discussed. Eye and face protection needs are reviewed and available protection devices are described. Eye injuries involving contact lenses also are considered. The performance of glass lenses is compared with that of plastic lenses. Current standards and specifications for protective devices are evaluated. Problems of lens distortion and prism effects are reviewed. Attributes for, and the development of, eye and face protective equipment are identified. The author recommends the development of performance testing and user standards.
