A Comparison of Test Fixtures for Drop-Ball Impact Testing of Safety Spectacles

  This report describes the results of drop-ball impact tests which were conducted for the purpose of evaluating five different safety spectacle mounting fixtures. The present ANSI Z87.1-1968 lens-only test block was found to be an adequate method for testing lens breakage. However, additional fixtures are needed to test the entire lens-frame unit. Both the present Z87.1-1968 lens-in-frame test block and the proposed Z87.1 test fixture were found to be inadequate due to their limited application and mechanical problems. The remaining two test fixtures examined in this study were designed by NIOSH for the purpose of eliminating the problems associated with the above mentioned test fixtures. It was found that these two test stands accommodated all styles of spectacles presently available and eliminated some problems associated with the other fixtures. [Description provided by NIOSH]
