Description:A survey was conducted at ICI Americas, Incorporated (SIC-2818, group 281), Bayport, Texas, on July 14, 1982. The survey was part of a NIOSH study of chemical process unit operations. The facility manufactures ethylene-oxide (75218) and its derivatives. The facility employed about 200 persons, 115 of which were involved in production. An additional 110 were contract maintenance personnel. A part time physician and full time nurse were employed. Annual physical examinations and chest X-rays every 3 years were given to all employees. Employees working in the ethylene-oxide facility also provided a comprehensive medical history and were checked every 6 months. Areas inspected were tank car loading, quality control sampling of facility equipment, disassembly and decontamination, laboratory analysis, and control instrumentation repair and maintenance. Hazard controls assessed included engineering controls, monitoring, personal protective equipment, and work practices. The author concludes that all the elements surveyed (personnel, equipment, operating standards, work practices, housekeeping, and scale of operations) are of a high order. An indepth survey of the facility is recommended. [Description provided by NIOSH]
